A political thriller advancing the theory that it was in fact Edward De Vere, Earl of Oxford who penned Shakespeare’s plays; set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her.

Film Review

For me the important thing is not so much the film and its accuracy, but more that it was made at all. I thoroughly recommend that if you want to get the full flavour of the debate about the authorship issue, you read Charlton Ogburn's book The Mysterious William Shakespeare. In it he conducts a masterful analysis of the theory and exhaustively researches all of the points made for and against the theory that Edward de Vere wrote the works written under the name of William Shakespeare. It is one of those books that you will either read all the way through because you become so convinced that de Vere is the author and want to read more, or you will put it down half way through because you have been hit over the head so hard that you just give in. He leaves no stone unturned and confronts every argument against the theory in a way that leaves you with your lower jaw hanging somewhere down around your knees in amazement. The "evidence" that de Vere wrote "Shakespeare&#…

The only lamentable aspect of this splendid film is that often critics seem to base their negatives on the premise that it was fact being presented, rather than hypothesis. It's a strong argument for many & for the majority, fantasy. It really doesn't matter, the entire production is exceptional artistry! The opening sequence is brilliant & definitely hones the audience's alertness. Once you're introduced to the premise, the initial opening seems to be far past. As much detail that went into its making goes beyond historical values & awe inspiring beauty of authenticity, it's a living world that we've allowed into, a secret shared. The acting all around is superb, one definite Oscar nomination omitted for Rhys Ifans. The subtle soul erosion of a talent never realized, to the final illusion of identity reinterpreted again & again. It left you deeply hoping that this was fiction for the sake that such a tragedy should never have been. Few…

This is definitely my type of movie. A movie that combines my interests for monarchic history, political intrigue and Shakespearean literature ALL IN ONE! It presents to us the premise that the William Shakespeare we know is just a front for a certain Earl of Essex who could not claim authorship because of political reasons. The twisted tale woven by writer John Orloff may not really be accurate historically (who knows?), but definitely,it was very imaginative and clever, as delivered to us on the screen by veteran director Roland Emmerich. I will see Emmerich now in a different light after disliking his more famous works, like "Independence Day," "Godzilla" and the clunky "2012."The story took its time in expounding on its complicated plot lines. Some viewers may be turned off by the flashbacks and fast-forwards in scenes, as we meet the characters at different ages played by different actors, which may really be quite confusing at first. But you will ce…
