Film Review

Seven years in a Vietnam POW camp with constant torture changes a man in ways most of us will never understand. Why would a man allow torture to continue back home over $2,000 worth of silver? But, that is what Maj. Charles Rane (William Devane) did and it got his wife and child killed. The setup to the murders took up the first reel of film, but you hope the rest will move quickly. At least he has the pretty and perky Linda Haynes following after him with stars in her eyes.He also has Tommy Lee Jones in one of his first film roles, to help him. Jones looked so young, he must have just walked off the Harvard football field.Continuity was not as factor for director John Flynn, as things did not proceed logically, and a lot of things were unanswered, but it was an interesting film from the era.

Rolling Thunder (1977) *** (out of 4) Simple but effective drama about Major Charles Rane (William Devane) who returns home from Vietnam after eight years as a POW. A few weeks in a gang of thugs kill his wife and child but also cut off one of his hands. The thugs think they kill him but don't and of course revenge is going to follow. This film got a shot of popularity back when Quentin Tarantino raved about it and even named a production company after the film. It had been on my radar to see every since and I'm glad I got to watch the film but I actually ended up enjoying it for other reasons than what I expected. I had heard that this was another violent tale from screenwriter Paul Schrader and there's no question that this shares many elements with his very own TAXI DRIVER but what really pushes this film isn't the violence but the performance of Devane. Much like Travis from the Martin Scorsese flick, Major doesn't say too much and how effective director F…

Paul Schrader's ROLLING THUNDER is one of the most disturbing and painfully effective films I have seen in quite a while. William Devane has always been one of my favorite actors and was a wise choice for Air Force Major Charles Rane, decorated Vietnam War veteran and former POW who comes home to a world that is completely hostile. The movie has an aura of grim, unromantic raw irony about it that is the perfect embodiment of the paranoid 70's post Vietnam angst trip. This is exactly the movie 1977 had coming to it, and the great shame is that studio indifference has kept it from widespread release on home video and now DVD for years. The film's central home invasion scene is chillingly portrayed not as a crime of passion or genuine gain for the aggressors but just a matter of routine, including the massacre of Rane's family which puts the plot's 1970s revenge thriller into motion. By then we understand that Rane's humanity had been destroyed long before he…
